Fujimori says Japan consented to forcefully end hostage crisis in 1997

(LIP-wb) -- The Japan Times reports in Wednesday's edition former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori stated in an interview he believes he obtained Japan's "understanding" in using force to end the 4 month long hostage crisis at the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima in April 1997.

The interview with Fujimori, currently in Chile awaiting the ruling on his extradition to Peru,  was conducted prior to the 10th anniversary of the crisis that began on December 17, 1996.

According to the Times article, Fujimori and Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto issued a joint statement before the assault in Toronto that said, "It is essential to secure the physical and mental health of the hostages."

The statement made the Japanese side believe that it could turn away the possibility of an armed assault, while Fujimori thought he received an endorsement from Hashimoto, he said.
