I've been here nearly 8 years, but I am surprised and disappointed to learn that someone can go to prison for "crimes against the symbols and values of the country". Is this the Soviet Union? I understand that peeing in public should be treated as a minor crime, but at best vandalism. Imagine what would happen if he had burned a flag and chanted anti-governmental comments. Isn't freedom of speech and expression central to true democracy?

I don’t think that anyone has the right to desecrate any countries’ historic, religious or national monuments. Yes, by all means, we should have the right to express ourselves, that is how freedom of speech is practiced in the free world. So to all of those ignorant individuals, who don’t know the difference, don’t confuse the issues. Punishments should be enforced perhaps not with incarceration but violators (intoxicated or sober) should be held until stiff fines are paid as it is done in any civilized country!

I'm Peruvian, and while I don't like some ignorant Chilean pissing my country's patriotic symbols, I agree with JC's questioning of the prison terms for this 'crime'. Of course, I am pissed ...litterally...
But, putting them in jail for this sounds more like a "bloody revenge"...We know what could happen to four chileans in a Peruvian jail- full of pissed Peruvian prisoners...Is this how we want justice to be fulfilled- through punishment with blood and rape?? Is this the kind of "democracy" we have fought for?
If anything, they should be forced to pay a good fine or bail out. Perhaps labour or community service, etc... but putting them in jail for 4 years...That is just a bit "too patriotic" beyond reasonable humanity.
I do love Bolognesi and Grau...But we are to learn anything about Grau is to be real human beings...We are better than those ignorant pissing Chileans.

rafael, what an uninformed comment you made.
I do not think what was done was proper, nobody does, but your hysterics is simply silly.
They should be punished, yes, probably even expelled from the country, but to face 10 years in prison is a joke.
And your claim that Peruvians do no such thing is a lie, there are drunks from every country in the world who do stupid things and I have seen Peruvians piss on ancient ruins right here in your own country and if you stopped being a hysterical misfit for one second and used brians and logic, you know I speak the truth.
