Tren Electrico – Lima's new light rail – will be free first few days

The Tren Eléctrico will be free of charge for passengers during the first few days of operation, which will begin July 11 on the stretch between Villa El Salvador and Grau Avenue, reports El Comercio.

This was announced by the Minister of Transportation Enrique Cornejo, explaining that the exemption from payment will allow passengers to try it out and promote its widespread use as an orderly and safe rapid transit service.

The minister added that the period of free service needs to be defined by the operating company.

The light rail will make the 22-kilometer trip in 27 minutes. "We've done tests with the five available trains and more will be coming within a few weeks," Cornejo said.

In addition, Cornejo said that the campaign to raise awareness of the dynamic operation and its service is titled "My Friend the Train" (Mi Amigo el Tren) and will launch in July.

The train is a wonderful new project. But to me it was not well thought out. Why is there no secure public parking at the major stations? There are many times I would gladly park my car and take the train. But I don't see any satisfactory parking near the train stations. Am I missing something? I don't see any incentive for people to leave their cars without a public parking feature.
