In Peru, we all know that pictures of the Cusco School deserve a very important place in the discussion, research and trade of local art. But little is known of its history, importance and contributions to universal art.
It is not surprising that it was precisely there, in Cusco, where the fusion of the native and European cultural traditions, had its origin. But the process took more than one hundred years until the beginning of the 17th century. In comparison with the speed of current technology, in the past everything went in a slower pace.
Even if the theme of the picture was mainly of catholic assignment, the cult to the Pachamama, used to be present even in icons as emblematic as Virgin Mary, whose wide silhouettes many times suggested the contour of the Apus (magic religious beings of the Andean cosmo vision), or showed reddish cheeks provoked due to the dry and cold weather of the Peruvian sierra. Great article, are there any books on the cusco school,# Dennis Ferguson Acosta says :

The ICPNA Gallery on Avs. Angamos and Arequipa in Miraflores recently inaugurated an spectacular exhibition on religious Colonial and Republican art called "Orígenes virreinales de la imaginería popular" presented by ICPNA and Universidad Ricardo Palma and curated by Ramón Mujica Pinilla. Some of the pieces have never been shown in public and the instalation is beautiful and easy to understand. I have already been twice. The show will be open until September 7th. A terrific 28 de julio gift to Perú.# dorothy Johnson says :

My daughter purchased a retablo for me in Cusco. It is a replica. She took it to the post office and was unable to mail it to me. Now she is stuck carrying it around her 6 week tour of Peru. I am wanting to know if she will be able to bring it through customs. If not, I don't want her to carry it around for 6 weeks. I would appreciate any advice# Stacey Hurlin says :

I am looking at a few Cozco paintings on ebay to purchase. Is there any way that these would be original? And what does original mean? That they are painted by artists at the Cusco School of Art or that someone else, not at the school painted them but still they are original? Or would the be a copy, replica, of an original Cuzco? Any thoughts on this? Thank you, Stacey# Judith Chavez-Webster says :
