After two years of absence in Lima's art scene, Peruvian artist Carlos Runcie Tanaka comes back with a new installation Into white / Hacia el blanco, which opened last night at the cultural center ICPNA.

A minimalistic, austere and zen-like installation, Into white showcases 36 handmade glass crabs and a long, uninterrupted white path made of one piece of paper. The installation is a meditation about death, seen as our souls' transit towards the light — the white light that many people who have had near-death experiences describe.

The crab has been an icon constantly present in Runcie's works for a long time, and 36 is also a symbolic number. The artist's grandfather drowned at 36 years old, and Runcie himself saved from the same fate at the same age.

The other hall of the installation showcases ceramic pieces and a video installation related to the heart surgery Runcie underwent almost two years ago.

This exhibit runs through June 20 at the German Kruger Espantoso art gallery, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. ICPNA, a cultural center with live arts programming and language courses, is located at Av. Angamos Oeste 160, at the corner of Av. Arequipa in Miraflores. Visit their website here.
