Cows Invade Lima: The Cow Parade!

By Katrina Heimark
Photos by Armando Alcázar

Cows Invade Lima: The Cow Parade! That's right! Lima has been invaded by an army of cows! But these are not ordinary cows; they are works of art!

The Cow Parade, an international art exhibit, has traveled the world bringing humor and charity to hundreds of cities!

Cow Parade aims to break the boundaries between art and people, as well as support local artists and charities.

In this photo essay, you will have the opportunity to see some of the exquisitely decorated cows that have set up home throughout Lima.

While some range from the funny to the serious, each cow is a delight and an artistic feat in itself!

Enjoy the photos, and hopefully you will get a chance to see these magnificent cows in person!

Rosy, I was in Lima just a couple of weeks ago; we were at the J.W. Marriott, just accross the street from Larco Mar and that is where you will find the "famous" cows! They are colorful and artistic and I believe they are there to stay.
Have a good visit, Lima is looking really great!

I think it's the worst idea ever and some of them are really ugly.

I've been in Zurich where there is a lovely collection of huge wonderful painted pots, each one with a plant on it decorating the city. I think 'that' is a really nice art collection. But cows are farm animals which are in no way related to cities or cupids. And I don't think they should be used as a barbecue show off, it's degradating.

I just hope they take them away soon. I find them disgusting.

Armando did a great job of taking these sculptures, we had the same type of show in Connecticut. It is a great way for the artist to be creative with their work.

In November I visited a daughter and her husband in MiraFlores and we enjoyed the cows at Parque Kennedy, then more in Barranco and Central Lima.  I remember all but a few in the photos, so I suppose there is at least one more location.  I was used to cows in the city, having lived in India.  My background in improvisational dance had me appreciate what imagination artists applied to the cows, while staying within the tasks guidlines and commonality.

"Sobre gustos y colores no han escrito los Autores" is a latino expression that literally should means: = "About tastes and colors there is nothing written by Authors".
I have seen art expressions like this with elephants, bears, donkeys and birds in USA and in Turkey and I think it is a very interesting way to materialize the art and creativity of any each human been. I love it.
This is a temporary exposition that change the aspect of the cities with the imagination and colorfull ideas.
Congratulations to the iniciative and congratulation to the professional or amateur artists.
Hugo

Its great to see after five years some nice cows in Lima, there was a succesful exposition in Zurich Switzerland 5 years ago. Its so nice to see the mix between peruvian and swiss culture. Me encanta ver despues de cinco años , cuando hubo una exposicion muy exitosa en Zurich  de vaquitas una version peruana. Siempre era y es linda y muy exitosa la mezcla de nuestras dos culturas. We live in the UK and have recently had 'Rhino- mania' in and around the city of Chester, with painted rhinos.  I thought they were good until I was sent a link for these cows.

"Holy Cow.....they are FANTASTIC!"

I take my hat off to public art. What a wonderful concept, and for us all to enjoy. Thank you.
