A Peru weekend getaway: The beaches of Mancora

Travel to Mancora, Peru
A view from the Grand Mar hotel in Mancora, Peru. See slide show.

By Carsten Korch

The idea about kidnapping my wife to have a weekend to ourselves for the first time in 10 years started when I received an offer from Groupon to stay at the Grand Mar hotel in Mancora with a 50% discount for three days, two night for S/. 280, including breakfast. Great deal!

I checked the airfares to go in March and learned that I could get two roundtrip airfares for only $220. After that, all I needed to do was book everything and convince my wife it was about time to leave our sons and spend some quality time together. So I did.

Two luxury beach resorts in Mancora, Peru

El Comercio
Adapted from Spanish by Diana Schwalb

When we have a long weekend, we need to think about traveling. And if we want to have the sun on our side, the north of Peru is a good destination to move beyond the routine and stress. Mancora, an hour and a half from Tumbes (the best way to get there is on an airplane), offers today a very modern hotel infrastructure that has changed its face.

The Family Option
The Mancora Marina Hotel has just opened its doors. It's a luxurious accommodation. It currently has 12 rooms but is thought to become the largest resort in the area. They are planning on opening six exclusive family suites in October and they will open the rest after that; in total 109 rooms.

Máncora and Vichayito: Best bets for luxury beach getaways

Adapted from El Comercio

Máncora and Vichayito: Best bets for luxury beach getawaysThis is a beach area for all tastes, even for the pickiest. Imagine a glass of champagne before sunset, a massage while listening to the gentle roar of the waves, cocktails at sunset accompanied by the most select music and, finally, a comfortable and luxurious stay in a Bedouin-style tent. That's what the area of Mancora, Las Pocitas and its surroundings, which include Vichayito, present today.

Bedouin Style
As with the most exotic and luxurious tours, a different proposal has been installed in the south of this tourist resort, right on the beach of Vichayito. We refer to Vichayito Bungalows & Tents belonging to the hotel chain Aranwa Hotels Resorts & Spas, which installed Arab Bedouin-style tents. They offer nice spaces with comfortable king or queen size beds, balconies with wooden decks, chaise longues and hammocks, LCD TV, in addition to organic snacks, telephone, minibar and private bathroom.

“Our guests seek the peace and calm of the ocean, combined with high quality spaces. This is a unique offer in the area,” says the executive Gabriel Alvarez, vice president of operations in Aranwa. These tents have a double ceiling, providing a cool environment that is ideal to enjoy the sun and the summer breeze. Note that the investment committed in this section is of US$ 700 thousand dollars.

In addition to this space that is closer to the sea, the hotel has recently opened new areas including the outdoor hot tub and a recreation area for the children. There are 26 tents and these have a price ranging from US$120 per night plus tax.

Máncora: Perfect Beaches in Northern Peru

By Rodney L. Dodig

Máncora: Perfect Beaches in Northern PeruGentle waves lapping the beach, the sun warming your face as you look up, romantic walks and the clean smell of salt air are some of the pleasures that await you on the beaches of Máncora Peru. You can travel to this stunning exotic location by bus, plane, taxi or a combination of all three. I flew into Tumbes, the capital city of the district of Tumbes and took a taxi from the airport to my hotel in Máncora. This ride took about 1½ hours and cost S/. 130 from the airport. There are cheaper modes of travel like the bus or a combi but they will take a little longer to get there.

Mysterious Pyramid Complex Discovered in Peru

Kelly Hearn
National Geographic News

Mysterious Pyramid Complex Discovered in Peru The remnants of at least ten pyramids have been discovered on the coast of Peru, marking what could be a vast ceremonial site of an ancient, little-known culture, archaeologists say.

In January construction crews working in the province of Piura discovered several truncated pyramids and a large adobe platform (see map). Officials from Peru's National Institute of Culture (INC) were dispatched to inspect the discovery.

It was  announced that the complex, which is 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) long and 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) wide, belonged to the ancient Vicús culture and was likely either a religious center or a cemetery for nobility.

(LIP-wb) -- Few people are aware that the extremely arid Sechura desert possesses three distinct aquatic ecosystems inhabited by an impressive number of birds: the lakes of Ñapique and Ramón, the mangroves of San Pedro and the Virrilá estuary.

Researcher Alejandro Tello, one of Peru’s birding experts, has visited the area several times and recounts here his valuable experience

The narrow ribbon of asphalt that links the city of Piura with the port of Bayóvar is interrupted to the south of the village of Sechura by a strip of sea water reaching 35 kilometers into the interior. This is the Virrilá estuary, the ancient course of the Piura River and still used by it occasionally.

Today it is home to the largest colony of flamingoes in all Peru; with no less than twenty thousand of these birds putting the famous flocks of Paracas in the shade.
