The author of the fantasy novel "The Bone Sword," released by Rhemalda Publishing on Nov. 1, is quick to point out the influence Peru had on the creation of the book.
Walter Rhein wrote the novel while living in an apartment on Calle Arica in the Lima district of Miraflores. With little money coming in except from the earnings of the occasional short story or article sale, Rhein said that he was able to live on only a few hundred dollars a month. He found that his U.S. savings lasted a lot longer in Peru than they ever could back home (a fact more and more retirees seem to be discovering), which allowed him the necessary time to properly engage his creativity. The effort paid off when the rights to his novel were picked up earlier this year.
Married to a Peruvian woman, Rhein has recently returned to the U.S. to promote his book which is being released by the small, traditional publisher Rhemalda. He describes the book as a typical fantasy romp which serves the necessary purpose of escapist adventure. However, if you press him for any further information, all he ever wants to talk about is Peru.
“Peru is the greatest country in the world," he says. "It's a place where you can spend an entire day at a quaint little cafe and meet a hundred fascinating people who are interested in art, ideas, and simply enjoying life.”
Rhein also said that he has several manuscripts still in his hard drives about various adventures that have befallen him in Peru, but that he has yet to find the proper publishing opportunity for them. He says that he's excited to return to Peru soon since, according to him, his heart is 100 percent Peruvian.
